3.3 — Choosing the Right Claude Product Feature

Use a decision framework to choose between a plain chat reply, a Claude Project, research mode, an Artifact, or structured output like a table — based on what the task actually needs, not habit.

Claude.ai offers several distinct surfaces for getting work done, and picking the wrong one costs time, accuracy, or both. A plain chat reply is the default: a self-contained answer read once in the conversation itself. A Claude Project adds persistent context — custom instructions and a knowledge base of reference material — available across many separate conversations, not just the current thread. Research mode has Claude actively search and synthesize across multiple external sources over several steps, producing a sourced answer grounded in current information rather than only what it already knows. An Artifact is a separate panel for long-form, self-contained, or iteratively-edited content that benefits from living outside the back-and-forth chat flow. And plain structured output, like a table rendered directly in a reply, suits data meant to be scanned and compared rather than read as prose.

These aren't just five ways to dress up the same answer — each solves a different problem, and the exam tests recognizing which problem a given scenario actually has.

A Decision Framework

Work through these questions roughly in order:

Artifacts, Specifically: Long-Form and Iterative Content

Two signals point toward an Artifact rather than a plain reply: the content is long-form and self-contained (a report, an essay, a case study meant to be read or shared on its own), or it's something the user plans to keep iterating on rather than reading once. A 400-word case study meant for stakeholder review and several rounds of wording revisions is a textbook case: it's long-form, self-contained, and meant for iterative editing. For interactive content, like a small playable prototype, the Artifact panel keeps the running version visible and playable while accepting live edits — useful for playtesting, where you want to tweak one rule and immediately see the update without losing the running version or scrolling back through chat history.

A short, conversational answer meant to be read once and not revised doesn't need an Artifact. Length alone isn't the trigger — self-containment and the intent to iterate are.

Layering Features Together

These features aren't mutually exclusive. A conversation inside a Project might use research mode to gather current external information, then place the synthesized findings into an Artifact for the user to keep refining. The point of the framework above isn't to pick exactly one feature forever — it's to make a deliberate choice for each part of the task, instead of defaulting to plain chat for everything (losing persistence and sourcing you actually needed) or defaulting to an Artifact for everything (adding overhead to answers that were fine read once).

Key Concept

Match the feature to the actual need: Project for context that must persist across future conversations, research mode for multi-source current information with citations, an Artifact for long-form or iteratively-edited self-contained content, structured output for comparative/tabular data, and plain chat as the lightweight default otherwise. These layer together rather than being an either/or choice.

Common Exam Distractor

Watch for research mode offered as the answer when the question doesn't actually require live, multi-source external sourcing — it adds real latency for no benefit if Claude's existing knowledge already covers it. Watch equally for a Project offered for genuinely one-off information with no future reuse, and for "put it in an Artifact" offered for a short answer with no self-containment or iteration need.

    Recently announced features published this week are unlikely to be reliably covered by what Claude already knows; the request specifically needs current, sourced information, which plain chat alone doesn't fetch.

  • B Research mode, so Claude actively searches multiple current sources and cites where each claim came from Correct

    Needing current information gathered and cited across multiple external sources is exactly the scenario research mode is built for.

  • C A Claude Project, so the competitor information persists across future conversations

    Persistence across future conversations isn't what this request is asking for — the immediate need is finding and sourcing current information, which is a research-mode task, not a knowledge-persistence task.

  • D An Artifact, so the comparison is easy to keep revising later

    Artifact formatting is a reasonable follow-up step for presenting the result, but it doesn't solve the actual problem here — finding and citing current, multi-source information — which is what research mode addresses first.

You'll practice:

  1. In claude.ai, ask a self-contained factual question in a plain new chat (something Claude can fully answer from what it already knows, with no need for external sourcing or future reuse). Note that the reply is a one-off, self-contained answer.

    This establishes the plain-chat baseline: the lightweight default that's correct when none of the other features' specific needs (persistence, current sourcing, long-form iteration) apply.

    You should see: A direct, complete answer within the conversation, with nothing prompting a Project, research mode, or an Artifact.

    1. Pick a question you're confident doesn't need current external information.
    2. Notice there's no natural reason to want this answer available in future unrelated conversations.
    3. This is your contrast case for the next two steps.
  2. Create a Project, add a short piece of reference material to its knowledge base (a style guide, a set of background facts, or similar), and start a fresh conversation inside the Project asking a question that depends on that material without re-pasting it. Then start a second, brand-new conversation in the same Project and confirm the material is still available.

    This demonstrates the specific problem a Project solves — persistence across many future conversations — versus a one-off chat.

    You should see: Both conversations correctly draw on the uploaded material, even though you never re-pasted it into either one.

    1. Ask something specific enough that Claude must have actually used the uploaded material to answer correctly.
    2. If the second conversation doesn't have access, confirm the material was uploaded to the Project's knowledge base, not just pasted into the first chat.
    3. Compare this to re-pasting the same material into a fresh, non-Project chat — note the extra manual step you'd otherwise repeat every time.
  3. Use research mode to ask about a current topic requiring multiple external sources (e.g. 'what are the most recent updates to [a real product or topic] and where did each claim come from'), and compare the sourced result against what a plain chat reply to the same question would have produced.

    This exercises the specific value research mode adds — active multi-source lookup with citations — and makes the contrast with plain chat concrete rather than abstract.

    You should see: Research mode's response cites specific sources for its claims and reflects current information; a plain chat attempt at the same question either declines, hedges, or relies on older training knowledge without citations.

    1. Pick a topic genuinely likely to have changed recently, so the contrast is real.
    2. Check whether the research-mode answer names its sources explicitly.
    3. Note in one sentence which of the two responses you'd trust more for a decision that depends on being current, and why.
